A very rare pair of vintage copper & brass nautical masthead lanterns – one with copper back and 180˙ fresnel lens, the other with full 360˙ fresnel lens.
These are not your usual flimsy sheet-copper lamps, the brass lids are heavy cast-metal; the 180˙ version weighs 8.5 Kg and the 360˙ version 10 Kg.
They are also a good size: 30 cm back to front, 25 cm flat back length and 40 cm high including keys (180˙ version) and 30 cm diameter, 40 cm high inc. keys (360˙ version).
Both lamps have been stripped of pant and polished – the metals of the lids now exhibiting a wonderful patina. Each has a manufacturer’s brass plate on the front, with serial numbers and a year of manufacturer stamped inside (1974 for the 180; 1975 for the 360).
We have fully rewired each lamp with 1.5m of woven flex, switch and plug, leading to an E27 light bulb fitting.
The condition is very good, with minor wear and tear expected due to age and original use on board ship.
