A beautiful and very rare large brass ship’s telegraph made by A Robinson of Glasgow and Liverpool. Ours dates circa 1940s/50s.
We purchased this at the same time as the smaller vintage Chadburn brass telegraph, which is equally extremely hard to come by. (Robinson were bought by Chadburn – the originators of the ship’s telegraph – in 1968.)
Both handles function. As they are moved left or right according to the desired speed of the vessel, an internal bell rings.
The brass has been extensively polished (see photograph of the original condition in our image gallery). There is no glass in either face and the faces themselves have been copied from the originals, which were too damaged by age and wear to save. The brass body is original. The price reflects this.
The dimensions of this ship’s telegraph are 109 cm tall (not including handles), faces 35 cm diameter, 19 cm deep.
