Walking the streets of Truro, you may be surprised to find the headquarters of an international charity. ShelterBox hand-delivers aid to families devastated by conflict or natural disaster. The sturdy green ShelterBoxes contain family-sized tents to provide people with temporary shelter as well as items that help transform shelter into a home – such as cooking sets, solar lights and activity sets for children.
Their highly trained ShelterBox response teams go the extra mile to make sure that no one gets forgotten or left behind, travelling by foot, boat, helicopter or even tuk-tuk to get there. Whatever it takes.
And all this from deepest Cornwall. They started life as a small organisation in Helston and have grown to make a big impact across the world
Their new campaign Shine for Shelterbox is asking people to host a candlelit supper. As you dine, you’ll be raising money to provide light and emergency shelter for families who need it most. Every ShelterBox includes solar lights that can brighten lives in the darkest hour – when disasters strike and power lines go down, families are left vulnerable, away from comfort and light.
It’s easy to help. Just request a free Shine for ShelterBox fundraising kit and they can post one to you in time to plan your event. It has everything you need to add a little sparkle and stardust to the occasion, from beautiful recipes to invitations and table settings.
You can make it a cosy supper at home with family and friends or bring your neighbours together in a local venue.
Shelterbox are also looking for restaurateurs, publicans and chefs up and down the country to put on special candlelit events. Last 25 leading venues raised over £36,000 help 5,000 homeless families worldwide.
Check out the events happening near you, including the wonderful Appletons at the Vineyard near Padstow and several Brighton venues.
